Its kind of a revisiting if I am completely honest, because please dont think I was paying attention in class at KU...I was probably doing a crossword. I was good at them. I got lots of practice, lets be honest! If you dont know, the difficulty of crosswords increases as the week progresses starting on Monday and ending with near impossibility on Sunday. I would usually pay more attention in class on thurs/fri because the crossword for the day was a little more than I could handle, i would get frustrated and stressed and feel stupid. With the crazy world we live in, the last thing I need providing these feelings is a crossword!
My Grandma, until the day she died, could complete an entire crossword (no matter the day) in 5-10 minutes. It was impressive! Last christmas she came up to me, as I was doing the crossword, didnt ask if I wanted help...im sure she noticed I hadnt had very many boxes filled (Im sure it was a saturday or something...at least i hope) Put her hands on the table, leaning over the crossword and finished it in 5 minutes. She was pretty much a genius in my eyes!
Well I have recently revisited crosswords on my own accord, not because I was bored in class and had nothing else to do. But my dad saves them and gives me a big stack of them every week or so. And I get super excited when my special delivery of recycled paper containing crosswords is delivered! I usually do one every day at work and then more often than not do one on my days off. I'm getting better at them and can make a decent attempt on a sat/sun. But I heard they prevent Alzheimers....so therefor i'm sticking to it! I will sit on my couch, watch TV, and do a crossword. Make my GMA proud. Maybe by the time i'm nearly 90 years old I will be able to complete it on a daily basis in a timely manner.
I realize you probably don't care about my ridiculous time wasting tactics, But i've got you covered the next time you need a 4 letter word for Abbot's charge...ill let you know once i fill in all of the down words making up that across word. You. Are. Welcome!

Deep Tissue

So a few days ago, I put myself into a situation that I maybe wasnt extremely prepared for. I got a deep tissue massage.
Holy goodness...Never have I ever felt as though my body was going to be snapped in half, or just fall apart due to sheer surrender to Mr. Massage Man. I went into this, not necessarily expecting a relaxing experience, and should have picked up on context clues. ie Massage Man says "Dont worry I work on the KU football team." I claimed that I was smaller than most football players so to not treat me as one. But I have also been having some decent back issues so I went into this with an "it will hurt so good" mentality. Luckily I was face down for most of it. Saying the "F" word in my head a lot and cringing about every minute, but I kept telling myself it is "good pain." I was hoping running could be a little more enjoyable, that I wouldn't feel as though I am 65 every morning when i get out of bed, or that it would decrease my back spasms. So therefore, I endured! Thinking that an hour of pain would lead to at least a few weeks of relief. I started sweating profusely and began to wonder why they would ever have a table warmer on in this scenario, sweating out of pure coping mechanism, not because it was hot... Had to solely concentrate on not cussing out loud.... really began to hate the piano/ flute music playing. I felt like I was experiencing something that demanded something a little more motivating. Queen, Eye of the Tiger, the song of the opening video of a KU football game. something....anything... other than a flute!.... wondering is that really his hand...it has to be his elbow...is he standing on me or using an ice pick on my back....i dont know. I just know none of these sensations have anything to do with any other massage I have received or the calm back rub mom used to wake me up with every morning. I think im dying, or if not, my arm is probably going to fall off. Those were thought processes.
So far so good! Believe it or not. Between this experience, needless to say I could barely move the next day and drinking so much water to "get the impurities out" yada yada yada, and chiropractor visits I have found some relief.
But all in all. The deep tissue massage is one of the meanest things I have done to my body. And I think I am going back in a few weeks for some more torture, i mean help with my back.

I ran without headphones

So I did something I deemed nearly impossible in my eyes, yesterday. I ran without music! I have always wondered how other people did it. How do they distract themself from the horrible activity of running without headphones. Well I thought I would give it a go. And i kinda liked it. Though, I thought it was eerily quiet while i was running. So I got to thinking...is this what the world has come to. We cant appreciate silence, or maybe the opposite. We can appreciate it, because we never get it. How many people fall asleep with a TV on, or how many people on campuses put their headphones in the minute they leave class so they have some sort of incoming audio stimulus, I know I never drive without the radio or my ipod playing, at home music or the tv is always on, I even turn on my outdoor speakers while doing yardwork. So maybe I am alone in this that I overload myself, but I have a feeling I am not. I think it will be something I do more often. Engage in the environment around me vs. shut myself off from everything around me.

Midnight

Im going to midnight showing a movie i wouldnt usually see at a normal time of day....but im in a spontaneous mood and im going...did i mention that i work at 7am tom!? lets do this!!

Trolley Run

So I had a big accomplishment this weekend! I ran a race. A legit race. Not like I raced ridgely to my bed so she didnt take my spot (yes that happens). But a legit race on the roads of kc with 10000 people. And drumroll please....I didnt DIE! I had been having some breathing issues, and finally bit the bullet and went to a chiropractor. Though the thought of a chiropractor terrified me. i like walking and talking and not being paralyzed! Im just sayin. Well I now love the chiropractor!!!! After being body slammed in the process of getting adjusted (i guess my back was jacked up..which required the "big guns" which consisted of a bear hug body slam by my tiny chiropractor) I thought it was funny once i realized I didnt die as a result of the "big guns" approach. I went from having to take a break every mile while running to stretch out my back to being able to run 4 miles without stopping the next day. It was great!
But onto the race. It was way too early in the morning!!! I had seen multiple people i hadnt seen in a really long time before 7am...ugh! im not one for much interaction before 7am, but it was tons of fun. Tons of adrenaline. I ran the whole time...saw people i knew cheering people on all along the way, and I think...dont have photo proof, but i may have had a smile on my face for part of it! I ran faster than I usually do and I wasnt completely exhausted at the end. So yes, my bib is on the fridge like a 2 year olds artwork. But Im proud of myself for setting a goal for myself and actually sticking to it. And it was longer than a 5k which was my original goal. And if running races leads to the type of nap I took yesterday afternoon after the run...im doing them more often! Welp...off to the chiropractor to fix what i did to myself yesterday!

Thumbs!

So, its not commonly know...but i have small hands and i had a revelation tonight! Now, I like me some corona or dos equis (sp?) with a lime! But i commonly come to the delimma that my hands/thumbs are too small to do the trick of sticking your thumb in the neck of the bottle...tipping it over...and letting the lime present itself to the entire beer! Well today I could...my thumb was big enough to get the task completed. I just dont know if the last 3 years have been a lie. My thumbs are gaining weight. or I just underestimated my thumbs potential. Well to say the least i can now use my thumb to distribute the lime-ness in my corona...and due to that...all is right in the world and i no longer need to use the palm of my hand to seal the top while i did the lime flip!

multi-tasking

So as many of you know I am a humungous Ellen fan! As I got to thinking about that...I didnt know if that was a good thing. Yesterday after only 24 hours of deliberation and money sorting I booked a week long trip to Costa Rica to go visit, formentioned friend. I wonder if I enjoy the near puking feeling I get when I hit the confirm button for a not-so-cheap airplane ticket. Or if maybe I should listen to that near puke feeling as maybe its not a good idea. Well, I say i miss my friend, Lisa. Im tired of the tundra I unknowingly moved to and need warm weather. And I LOVE COSTA RICA!! So forget it being a good vs. bad idea, IM GOING and couldnt be more excited!
But then it comes down to the times, you maybe have a few too many mimosas over breakfast and end up with 3 holes in your ears. GOOD/BAD? I dont know, I dont regret it. And I say if you are going to poke 3 holes in your ears, you might as well do it with a few mimosas. You may bleed a little more, but it sure as hell won't hurt as bad! Priorities!
Both of my tattoos have minimal preparation or warning.
I bought a house after only 2 mos of thinking I would buy a house...ugh! Dont get me wrong I love it. But a few of these "spontaneous" decisions are about to make me broke as a joke...well, not really.
Im wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I am NOT PATIENT! I am well aware of this and working on it. Who knows! But as for now, and the chapter of life I am in. I see no other way to go about things. So here is to either going broke or more self-inflicted pain...and probably a few more mimosas to deal with the consequences of those two scenarios. And hoping to not give my mom a heart attack in the process!

Winter and homeownership

It's been awhile...But tonight is one of those nights you go down your list of bookmarks and check out websites you haven't visited in awhile...and came across my blog. my last post was from lawn mowing days so i thought i would go along with the theme of me adjusting to being a homeowner...
Well considering I think i fell asleep one day and woke up in Montana/N Dakota/ Minnesota fill in the blank with a place that receives and abundant amount of snow. I have come across new findings in the joys of becoming a homeowner...winter style!!
So here in KC we have received more snow than I have experienced in my entire life. Im not being sarcastic...its legit. And the more surprising thing is that it isnt melting and it doesnt look like it is going to for awhile. Well after spending 3 hours on christmas...after I worked all day...shoveling my driveway!!! It was great! I know you are jealous and that that is what you all hope and dream about doing on your christmas day. But Erin and I decided we no longer liked those in our lives that wished for a white christmas, when they dont have to work. but on to my new favorite part of home-ownership in the winter...FROZEN PIPES!!!
My bathroom, and luckily only my bathroom, pipes froze. I had only hot water in my sink and only cold water in my shower. Talk about things being ass-backwards! I tried everything possible to prevent the inevitable....gracing my crawl space with my presence. I had yet to go down there, and yes...i called my dad...he didnt answer....so i called my neighbor...he didnt answer...so i called my dad again! because i was not going to go down there first. As my roomate is telling me that snakes stock up on food prepared to lay low for the season. So I am imagining Mr. Smart Snake that prepared adequately by staking his winter home in my crawl space all beefed up and big cause it has a winters-worth of food in its "belly?" Please note previous post on my love or lack thereof of snakes. Needless to say, i made it into my crawl space...twice that day actually and survived with no snake/mice sightings (yet i am convince they are still down there). I know im being dramatic, but it happens and that is how i cope.
I have now placed a space heater that will permanently be roomates with previously mentioned smart snake in my crawl space. And I have shoveled my f'ing driveway 4 times. Times i wish i lived in an apt again! not to mention our house temp is set extremely low due to our insane gas bill last month. OH THE JOYS!! Here's to Global Warming!

Domination of a very evil thing!

Soooo...I had an epic moment today! Let me explain.
Im mowing the lawn which turned out to be one of the worst "mows" of the year, as well as doing other random yard work and came across a snake. After saying some choice words, staring at it all coiled up for like 15 minutes without moving a muscle to prevent prompting and attack, and being extremely thankful I had a shovel in my hands for all forms of protection necessary (or maybe not). But at the time, it was quite convincing. So a look into sarah's thought process. Mr. Snake I dont appreciate you sticking your creepy little tongue thing out at me, you have a red pigment in your skin (red is never good in my eyes), and you are not big enough to help me by eating mice...so you are going to have to die. For 2 reasons: I cant have you biting my dog, and I will consistently be anxious in my yard knowing your potential presence. To prevent being attacked I got on my fence and held one with one hand and had a rock in the other looking extremely stoic im sure.....3 rocks later i finally hit the satan/Slytherin (thanks beth) mascot (how i justified being ok with killing it). I will spare you the graphic details of decapitation.....but it just had to happen.

Im proud of myself for conquering something that i despise to be in the presence of. In conclusions...I dominated a basilisk and unfortunately was unable to speak parseltongue to apologize to him before hand and explain my reasoning. Really hoping my H Potter dreams dont carry over tonight involving a basilisk. That might do me in.

This just in!!!! Ridgely going crazy outside...a baby Possum, nasty tail and all, perched on my fence. What the crap. This house is turning into a rodent, disliked wildlife version of Neverland. (MJ, RIP)

End Scene...

So the time has come that I say goodbye to being a Young Life leader. It is turning out to be a bigger transition than I thought it was going to be. I've noticed it to be a bit of a mourning period. Losing something that has been such a huge part of my life for the last 10 years. It has been a crazy last year in all sorts of areas of my life. Spiritually it has probably been one of the hardest years. As well as probably one of the biggest emotional roller coasters I have ever been on. Mentally, I questioned the confidence I had in myself on a daily basis. But the frustration it had brought along over the last year or so was making me question everything it had taught me initially. On that note, I decided it was time to take a step back and let someone who was less "tired" or burnt out than I to take the reigns.

Young Life is probably one of the biggest cornerstones of my life to this point. I have met a majority of my best friends through YL and being at YL camps. I have learned that I can wake up on a daily basis at 530 am and cook for 500 people at a time. I have learned how to tie the strongest knot and safely work a ropes course 40 feet in the air. I have learned how to work with YL kids on a very vulnerable level being a camp nurse. Along with tons of other great things I will use on a daily basis. I have seen literally 100s of high schoolers lives change before my eyes. It has been a great chunk of my life, but also some of the hardest times of my life. I will obviously cherish all of these times and they will always have a special place in my heart. But the time has come to move on.

The title of my blog is the "Shadow Proves the Sunshine" after the Switchfoot song. I think it is so evident in life that if we dont have times that suck and times that are dark, we will never fully appreciate the good things. We have to have the bad to recognize the good. I have clung to these words during my YL career as a leader. What an encouragement! People always ask, why me? how do bad things happen to good people? Well, there are tons of reasons for that I believe. But I believe one of them is so we can see God's goodness compared to the wickedness we have inside of us and that we deal with. And all the way down to the foundation. My God is the only thing that can radiate light in the grimmest of situations I have been involved in.

So here's to ending a chapter to start a new chapter following what God has in store for me. And on a less serious note, If you have any suggest for what I should do with my free time...Im a little nervous about becoming a bum since I only work 3 days a week. So I guess, here's also to finding new hobbies and past times.

I am extremely thankful for my friends and family who have encouraged, supported, prayed, listened, and advised me over the last few years. You are great.
...End Scene.

Hello World..

I know you all were worried about my existence due to my lack of blogging. Ok maybe not...im trying to make this blogging thing feel like its worth something so I keep up with it.

Things have been crazy to say the least. But I will discuss the current situation with that of my dog. Ridgely stayed with my parents for a night while I was at a wedding in Wichita and I come home and she is scratching like a kid in MN without bug spray...because dont act like there arent enough mosquitos in MN to make up for the entire world!! I will never live there for that one reason.
So it progressively gets worse and due to my lovely work day that last 12 hours couldnt get to the vet for 2 days! So I go to the vet and she asks me if I am familiar with "hot spots." Well if you are talking about hot spots for travel...then of course...New York, LA, Orlando, Boston, etc.. Or wait...maybe you are talking about warm areas....Needles, AZ is supposedly the hottest place in the country, or maybe Death Valley. Corpus Christy (never been there by close to the equator), and for that matter how about Puerto Rico. But in regards to my dog....NO I DONT KNOW WHAT HOT SPOTS ARE...please indulge! Well to say the least we left the vet $120 later and a shaved chest (Ridgely...not me). Really? Was the shaving necessary. Because it has had several consequences:

1. My dog just straight up looks "special"
2. She has shed enough hair to make multiple 1/2lab/1/2 shelty fur coats...wish there was an industry for it!
3. Scratches heal in a few days....a shaved chest=atleast 3 mos. of a compromised dignity and pride for my pup.
So in the future stick with your instinct...ask the vet to give the hydrocortisone shot and see if it works before they shave your dogs chest.

Global warming...my A!

So here is the deal, it would actually have been more fitting to write this blog yesterday while it was still crappy out, but i didnt!
Here is the dilemma: I have decided to stop taking "Global Warming" for what it says it means. Yesterday was April 7th and in the 40's maybe it got to 50. The day before that was April 6th and I saw snow flurries. Is this for real?!?! Global Warming??? Really?? I mean I've seen Al Gore's movie, I've seen the pictures of Mt Kilamanjaro with less snow every few years, but for the people who think Global Warming is hoax...move to KS, people might actually believe you. I know I just bought a house, but I was not aware that it was in the tundra....dang! Im over this weather and for my sanity and overall mood...warm weather you are starting to come around...kinda...id love it if you stayed!

So then I got to thinking what are other things that I am going to start taking less literally?

Thriving Economy (from previous people in office)
Paper cut is the WORST thing...really? (ok i stole that from Ellen, but so true)
Im having 10/10 pain even though im so drugged I can barely open my eyes to tell you this.
Dickie V picked KU as #1 next season (He did, but do you think it will last more than a week?)
Band-Aid (it doesnt help bands, Cut-Aid would be more appropriate)
Keychain (I dont know about you but my keys are not linked by ringlets to each other in a line)
The season of spring (Cause im still considering this winter)
Im sure more will come to mind....

But thankfully today it got to 70. SO i made it to the dog park, drove with the windows down, and wore flip flops. Could you imagine if our body temperature varied by 40 degrees on a day to day basis....(for another time)

So I went to the dog park twice this week and it was about 70 degrees each time I went. Who would have though it would snow 4-5 inches 2 days later. I cant imagine why so many people are getting sick in KS when it varies 40 degrees a day. It just baffles me! So there may be 4 inches of snow on the ground and 16 degrees outside...but I AM NOT cancelling my plans to lay out by the pool by thurs!! Its definitely possible. Welcome to the midwest! Oh and did I mention Im going to Costa Rica in 2 weeks. Close to the equator...maybe I will get some consistency in a few days. Im also planning on a snow storm around July 16th. It sounds fitting!

The Grammys

OK...so two posts in one day. I know its a little bit of overkill, but i just couldnt resist! I watched the Grammy's with complete focus tonight. Why? I dont know, and that will be inquired later, maybs! But I must just recap some of the highlights...or maybe better put...MY highlights of the Grammys.
1. Boys II Men released a new album. Who knew?? Now that you know...who thinks its the best thing ever? ME!!! Boys II Men was the second CD i ever owned and not many songs tug at the heart strings like "On Bended Knee." My childhood is still alive. And for those of you born in the late fifties/ early sixties can relate....on to #2.
2. NEIL DIAMOND-SWEET CAROLINE...Enough said!
3. I have always thought Kanye West was a bit of a DB. And tonight he solidified all of my assumptions by sporting a shiny silver jacket with a black man's version of a mullet.
4. Im pretty sure if a few more bass waves would have hit MIA her water would have broken!
5. Kid Rock gave me goosebumps with his "Amen" song.
6. I almost cried when Jennifer Hudson won her Grammy
7. I wish I were in the USC marching band tonight
8. I thought Whitney Houston was going to be classy and come back strong, but within 2 minutes was blubbering like crazy...pretty sure her and Bobby Brown did a little of what they do best back stage (get your mind out of the gutter).
9. Im still holding out for Stone Temple Pilots, Sugar Ray, Ace of Base, The Cranberries, and the Presidents of the United States of America to announce their comeback tour...Blink 182 is doing it!

Ipod Shuffle

So I was thinking the other day as i was driving around town about the concept of Ipod shuffle. If you dont know me...here is some insight...My music and my Ipod are necessities in my life as much as my deoderant, food, or toothbrush. My old Ipod started to get an attitude, and just in case it was on the verge of breaking I got a new one so there wouldnt be any down time. God forbid I would have to listen to Womanizer on the radio..ugh! So in the end my old Ipod decided he would break down and be a punk if not plugged into a power source at all times. So it is ALWAYS in my car...PLUGGED IN. I listen to my Ipod on shuffle of ALL songs all the time. I may just hit next everyone once in a while when a song doesnt really tickle my fancy.
Another thing important, I enjoy a very wide variety of music. So the other day "Hate Me" by Blue October was playing, and please use context clues of the title to assume what that song is about...and how it might sound. Its a little intense, loud, cussing! And my favorite....the next song was from Les Miserables...peaceful, pretty, nice. or better yet a snipit of Dane Cook standup to a worship song. I dont mind this, but I have found a few things in regards to other people being in my car...
1. They make fun of my listening to showtunes....well deal with it, and im pretty sure im using my gas and money to take you wherever we are going, so keep the comments to yourself and let me sing phantom of the opera or wicked!
2. They feel awkward, which in turn makes me feel awkward and self conscious in my own car...ridiculous! i find myself rockin out, but then when i pick someone up I hurry and change to a "neutral" artist that everyone likes...dumb!
3. Someone had the audacity once to unplug my Ipod and put theirs on without asking ...OH HELL NO! Welcome, to Sarah's car...these are the temperature controls do what you wish, here is how to reposition your seat...make yourself comfortable, here is the visor in case the sun might get in your eyes. But I have ONE rule...ok maybe two(dont tell me how to drive). But the Golden Rule is do unto my music as you would like me to do unto yours.
4. And maybe...you find something you have never heard before that you like...believe it or not.

i dont think I listen to bad music...of course I dont think I do. But atleast im not making you listen to honky tonk country, classical, or i want to kill myself and hate the world death metal! Oh well, I just thought it was funny thinking about this the other day, because even I noticed the potential to some crazy transitions or song orders.

Costa Rica?

So I am going to Costa Rica in about 6 weeks. Dont get me wrong Im excited. So excited that I think about the trip a lot. During this thinking anticipation stage I have come to realize I have a potential come across a few things I could live without! As follows:

I dont have many fears in life. But one is definitely a fear of all underwater life. I feel as though the only purpose it serves on this earth is to be consumed for dinner. The thought of scuba diving or snorkeling and being among hundreds of the little crappers at the same time would not be my idea of a relaxing day. We spend a day on the beach and/or in the rainforest. So on first dibs I would say hands down Im going to the rainforest to prevent any encounters with central american fish! But then my friend sent me this picture taken in a rainforest community in Costa Rica.
IS THAT A JOKE!?!?! THAT F'er IS BIG!!! I am pretty sure all of the members of our group have decided hell will break loose and we will all be running away, then probably get lost in the rainforest, if one is spotted. PERFECT! And I dont know if that thing is poisonous. I am assuming not since it is big enough to eat me, it has no need to have poison. Its little rhino horn on the front is enough to take someone down. But say it is poisonous...Yellow seems pretty poisonous. This leads to my third revelation: 3rd world country hospitals.

Costa Rica KU Med (where I work)

vs.

I have never been in the hospital and God help me if I end up in the hospital from that rhino of a bug or any other reason. I cant imagine being in hospital (on left) for my first experience. Compared to what I am used to (on right). Just a little bit of a difference. A work friend just had to spend the night in a hospital in Cabo, and was terrified the whole time. Bars on the windows, not exactly the most sanitary of places. SO lets raise our glasses to taking as many OTC medications possible to alleviate any symptoms until i get home.

To say this least I am hoping for the best in all 3 of these possible encounters. And upon my return I will be able to express that I never came across the rhino bug or got my foot bitten off by a pirahna!

ok peace out!

Once upon a time...

...in a far off village of. OK, but for reals!! HI! I am just as interested as you are to see where this is going to go. Sometimes my life is ridiculous, sometimes it has some slow spots...and I am equally thankful for both. I use (...) A LOT so get used to it. I use abrevs such as maybs, probs, and def and have a lot of sarahisms. I think its normal but my friends tell me these things.
Maybe I'll just use this to publish my own version of Marley & Me, but instead...Ridgely & Me. Ok, i probably won't. That movie made me cry my eyes out, and I wont put you through that! But just for grins, Ridgely is in a deep sleep right now, twitching and smacking her lips. its quite comical. Hopefully I will be able to express the entertainment in which i call my life on here for your entertainment. While you are bored at work, sitting on your comp at night, or just need to read something to make you feel better about your life...this is your place.
